archive of freedom

The "Cultural Attic" notebooks.

"We published "Cultural Attic" in Przemysl since 1988, in a home publishing house, with a circulation of 100 copies of the first issue. Its purpose was to document meetings, discussions, events created outside of state censorship, to develop a social environment for free thought, towards which independent culture naturally tended. In 1986, after one of the meetings with Krzysztof Dybciak on Polish émigré literature, the idea of publishing a magazine-testimony, "Cultural Attic," was born.

"The content of the magazine most often concerned contemporary issues and works, not infrequently referring to the question of freedom. We reached into the past to "dust off the lives of our ancestors" but also to pose questions, from fundamental ones about the meaning and value of human life, to practical ones: how to live, how to change the depressing reality. We did not ask questions about whether something is worth doing, but how: how to build our freedom. To help in this search, the guests of the attic meetings brought us closer to the discussions going on in the modern world, told us about the governance of free countries, about people in politics, art; about spirituality, literary creation, music or painting. We quickly understood that without knowledge of the mechanisms of political life in a democratic state and the activities of state institutions, building any new model of life in Poland will be ineffective" (Marek Kuchcinski)
